How Esano search ranks your listings

Updated

Esano search matches what a buyer types against your listing's title, search keywords, category, file types and description. Title matches rank first, then keyword matches, then everything else.

What search looks at

Search reads these parts of your listing:

  • Your Title
  • Your Search keywords
  • Your Category and the file types in your files
  • Your Description

Every meaningful word in the search must appear somewhere in those fields for your listing to match. Common English word forms count as the same word, so "cat" also finds "cats".

A short fixed list of spellings is treated as the same: clipart, clip art and clip-art, and tshirt, t-shirt and t shirt. Capital letters and punctuation never matter.

Search does not read your Works with field, your shop name, your shop groups or your reviews. Shops are found by name in a separate search. See Help shoppers find and share your shop.

How "Most relevant" orders results

Matching listings fall into five groups, best group first:

  1. The whole title is the same as the search.
  2. The search phrase appears in the title.
  3. Every search word appears in the title.
  4. Every search word appears across the title and the search keywords.
  5. The match also needs the category, a file type or the description.

Inside a group, a text score decides the order. Title words count the most, then search keywords, then category and file types, then the description. If listings still tie, the newer one comes first.

The practical lesson: a word that only appears in your description or file types can push you into the last group. Put the words buyers type in your title first.

What search doesn't use

Today, search results don't use sales, ratings, price or what a shopper looked at before. Esano doesn't personalize results or boost popular listings in search. Popularity does matter on the Trending page.

Spelling mistakes

If a search finds nothing, or only weak matches, Esano may try a close spelling. It only changes words of four or more letters that appear in no live title or keyword, and only when one replacement is clearly the best. A real title or keyword match stops any correction, and the results page tells shoppers when close matches are included.

Spell your titles and keywords correctly. Correction helps shoppers who misspell, not listings that do.

Sorting and filters

Shoppers can switch the order to Most relevant, Newest, Bestselling, Price: low to high or Price: high to low. Bestselling currently sorts by number of reviews, not by sales. See Sort search results and browse pages for what each option does.

Filters narrow the matches: category, file type, resolution, On sale and price. Category pages, Under $10 and shop pages list the newest listings first by default.

What a listing needs to show up

A listing appears in search, categories and other browse pages only when all of these are true:

  • It is live, not a draft.
  • It has at least one approved photo. Photos are checked after you upload them, and until they pass, the listing stays out of search and browse.
  • Your shop's Stripe account is set up for payments.
  • Your shop is not on vacation.

When these are true, search reads the current data, so there is no waiting period. Category, shop and Trending pages refresh within about 5 minutes. The search box's suggestion list can lag by up to 30 seconds.

Common questions

Do sales or ratings make my listing rank higher in search?

No. The default Most relevant order only uses how well your text matches the search. Sales, ratings, price and shopper history don't change it.

Why doesn't my new listing show up in search?

A listing only appears when it is live, has an approved photo, and its shop has payments set up and is not on vacation. Search reads current data, so it shows up in search as soon as it qualifies.

Does Esano search understand synonyms?

Only a short fixed list, such as clip art, clipart and clip-art. For any other wording, put the words buyers type in your title or search keywords.
