What upload and file check statuses mean

Updated

Each upload goes through two stages: sending the file to Esano, then a safety check. The row for the file shows the current step, a progress bar and a button to cancel.

Stage 1: uploading

  • Waiting to upload: The file is queued. Esano uploads files one at a time.
  • Choose a crop: Photos only. Crop the image, then select Use crop. See crop, reorder and remove listing photos.
  • Uploading 42%: The file is on its way. The row shows how much has been sent, for example "12 MB of 80 MB", and an estimate such as "about 3 s left".

Stage 2: the safety check

After the upload reaches 100%, the bar slides and a timer counts up. The step name changes as the check moves along:

  1. Starting safety check
  2. In line for a safety check
  3. Checking the file type
  4. Scanning for viruses
  5. Finishing up

You may not see every step. Small files can move through quickly. If your file is still being checked when the page stops waiting, you'll see "Your file is still being checked. It will appear when the check finishes."

The four file check results

Checks that continue after the upload row goes away, and files that need your attention, appear in a File checks list under the uploader. It updates by itself about every five seconds.

  • Checking: The check is still running. You don't need to do anything.
  • Ready: The file passed every check and can be delivered to buyers.
  • Blocked: The file broke a rule or a virus was found. The row explains why. This is permanent for that upload. See fix a blocked file.
  • Check failed: The check couldn't finish. Select Retry check or upload the file again. See fix a failed upload.

Buttons on each row

  • Cancel: Stops the upload or removes a pending check.
  • Dismiss: Clears an error row after the upload failed.
  • Retry check: Re-runs a check that failed. You don't need to upload the file again.
  • Finish saving: Appears for a photo whose check passed but that hasn't been saved to the listing yet.

Statuses on the listing

A live listing whose file failed its check shows a Needs new file badge in your dashboard, and buyers can't see the listing until you replace the file. See what listing statuses mean and replace files on a live listing.

Common questions

How long does a file check take?

Most files under 100 MB finish in about 10 seconds. Larger files and busy times take longer. The row shows a running timer.

Can I cancel an upload?

Yes. Select Cancel on the row while it is waiting, uploading or being checked. If it already failed, the button reads Dismiss.
